In the episode, a flashback discloses that fan-favorite character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife in advance to obtain a strong position there. Rosie, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.

This prompts an important query: How is this character sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?

“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that encompasses a great deal, leading into the third season,” the showrunner explains. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The answer could be many things, but the answer is in season three. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”

It is uncertain how long viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner frequently notes that animated production is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she says holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s focus in the right places.

“The difficulty of any agreement with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is providing the audience sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and letting that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”

Mysteries Resolved in Season 3

The showrunner assures that the upcoming season will tackle the questions followers have been asking, like why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which diminished his power in the infernal realm.

“The whole seven years, and the deals these individuals are making, and everything — it contributes to a larger story,” she says.

In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers another glimpse into how the main characters of Demonic Sinners looked like as mortals, following after seeing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era mortal appearance in episode 2. The creator explains that significant consideration went into the visual creation of these forms.

“The human versions of these personas hold so much weight,” she notes. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to seeming very similar. With Pentious, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between going with a design that represents the character, versus selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We opted for making a design that just felt like it was him.”

She says the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one typically had extended hair like that in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we think the silhouette is so important, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we design the mortal forms of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I am looking forward for people to see more of what the human forms look like.”

Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on Wednesdays on the streaming service.
