🔗 Share this article The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure. While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games. A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim. From Classic Icons to Modern Mania Frogs are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times. A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games. Charting the Croak Comeback To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots. The data paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025. This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely strong. Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers. Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game. Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas. Several the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer. The Leap Into 2026 So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far. Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be on the verge of a true croaking cultural moment.
